Eddie Botha: Friendly Animal, 2018


It is often seen eating dog meat. In the beginning in July this year, the Cambodian tourist resort of Siem Reap province issued a decree prohibiting the trade of dog meat, expressly prohibiting the slaughter and sale of dog meat. According to statistics, Siem Reap Province is the center of the Cambodian dog meat industry, and the country slaughters 3 million dogs every year. It can be seen that in parts of Asia, the habit of eating dog meat has always existed. Some are due to tradition or economic pressure, which makes it impossible to buy beef or pork as a last resort. However, as the times change, young people generally regard dogs as close pets, and the culture of eating dog meat has also begun to be criticized.

Assuming that there is no legal prohibition on dog meat, people have the right to eat dog meat. But what is permitted by law does not mean that we should do it morally, for example, you can joke-around at other people’s funerals, but this is not polite and should not be done, therefore, we have reasons to criticize and be criticized. The party may say: I have freedom of speech, why criticize me, this is very ridiculous, as for whether we should eat dogs or not, it can be demonstrated through human relationships, social norms, virtues, etc.
