Danny Dorling: Slow Down

Danny Dorling uses compelling visualizations to illustrate that fertility rates, per capita GDP growth, life expectancy growth, and even the frequency of new social movements have steadily declined in past generations. Perhaps, the most surprising fact is that even though new technologies often reshape our daily lives and are generally believed to be pushing our civilization into new and unknown waters, the rate of technological progress is rapidly declining.

The Author did not regret this turning point but regarded it as a moment of hope and stability. He pointed out that many earlier great strides have made great progress, and the definition of recent history has also brought about extensive wars, divided societies and huge inequalities.

Is the world losing control? Before reading Slow Down, I always thought so. The author’s human vision for a slower, more stable future gave me new hope, as well as an optimism is contagious. He incisively explored the huge challenge of slowing growth, and the world is transitioning to a new “normal” with a steady population decline.
