“Views of Water” is a series of six 8-minute videos trained in traditional Chinese ink paintings created by the innovative Chinese artist YANG Yongliang reconceptualized traditional materpieces from the Songy Dynasty painter MA Yuan (c1160 – 1225). These videos combine the images of oceans, rivers, and lakes collected during Yang Yongliang’s stay in New Zealand. The misty and turbulent gloomy scenery can be traced directly to the history of ancient landscape paintings. These works interweave the artist’s passion for Asian art history and personal insights into current events. Yang Yongliang uses the latest imaging technology to add atmosphere and dynamics to the picture. He delicately handles the water scene, mixing a touch of anxiety and annoyance to express his concern about the rising sea level and the hidden worry of freshwater supply.
